Hearts Choices Thai Vegan Cafe is a vegan paradise in Calgary if you are itching for Asian and Thai cuisine.
This is somewhat of a self-serve restaurant. The counter people provide the food, but you clear your own plates and serve your own water. While they don’t offer everything on their menu in the website, they still make a lot of dishes daily (everything is good, by the way).
Everything in Hearts Choices is vegan, so vegans rejoice! Maybe I was just so excited to be in another vegan restaurant, but I thought everything I ate was delicious! My friend ordered the pad Thai, and I ordered their combo plate with satay skewers, yellow curry and coconut rice. And everything was delicious!
For dessert, we ordered their raw vegan cheesecakes (blueberry lavender and pistachio) made from cashews. It didn’t taste like the traditional cheesecake, but it was still delicious because it was still creamy and not too sweet!
Aside from the restaurant, they also have a selection of vegan products and frozen prepared food in the market area. If you’re never tried vegan “meat,” give it a try because it will rock your world!
Recommended? Yes, especially if you are vegan/vegetarian!
COST: Normal. While not the cheapest eatery, Hearts Choices also will not break the bank. If you come here, expect to pay around $10 – $15 for a dish. For my combo plate, I paid about ~$16. The pad Thai was ~$12, and our cheesecakes were ~$5 each.
TASTE: Very good. The food here very, very, very flavourful! The satay skewers with peanut sauce were bomb! My Thai yellow curry was delicious, especially when paired with the coconut rice. The pad Thai wasn’t the best but it was still tasty. I really liked our vegan cheesecakes though! Highly recommended!
ACCESSIBILITY: Moderate. Hearts Choice Vegan Cafe is located in the southwest part of the city, which is a bit of a journey from Downtown Calgary. However, there is a train station nearby (Southland station), which is ~10 minutes to Hearts Choices by foot.
ATMOSPHERE: Okay. People come here to eat, not for the restaurant experience. It’s not the cleanest or atmospheric restaurant, but it’s good enough. In certain places of Asia (like Taiwan and Southeast Asia), whenever you eat in a small eatery like this, the customers clean up after themselves.
SERVICE: 8/10. Hearts Choices is a self-serve restaurant. That said, the counter servers were very friendly and even had us sample their curry! They were accommodating and helped us out when we had questions.
