Organic Coffee at Higher Ground Cafe

If you’re a coffeephile and caféphile like me, you will love Higher Ground Cafe in Kensington.

Aside from Inglewood and 17th Avenue, Kensington completes the trio of Calgary’s “hipster neighbourhoods.” These are centres of hipster culture and arts in Calgary, and where young people flock for fad foods.

Higher Ground isn’t one of those fads. They are an institution in Kensington, and have been serving the area since 1982. Perhaps the most popular local cafe in the area, Higher Ground has made a name for itself amongst its customers particularly because of the coffee and food they serve.

Coming to Higher Ground on a Sunday morning, it was nice that it wasn’t as busy as the other times I came on weekday evenings during winter. Tables were empty and music could still be heard. The bakery was full and service wasn’t hectic.

I wanted to catch up on my blog, so I ordered a soy latte and grabbed one of the many tables to sit. Wifi was available and there was no password, so my inner introvert was celebrating (^^). The soy latte ranks as one of the best in Calgary (along with Baya Rica Cafe)! I could still taste the coffee, the texture wasn’t too watery, and the soy complemented the coffee.

Their meals and baked goods are quite popular here, so next time, I shall try it.

The cafe was cozy and comfortable. You can just cuddle up with a book or laptop, or even just meet up with people. I wouldn’t recommend studying here, since it could get pretty loud when it’s busy. Despite this, Higher Ground Cafe is still highly recommended for their coffee!

COST: Moderate. As with most cafes and coffeehouses, the coffee and drinks are fairly similar. For a large latte (for example), expect to pay ~$5. Baked goods are about $2 – $5, depending on what you get.

TASTE: Very good. They should be very proud because their coffee is very good! My soy latte was delicious; the coffee wasn’t diluted and the texture of the coffee was great since it wasn’t too watery. Higher Ground is also famous for their baked goods, so next time, I will try that.

ACCESSIBILITY: Moderate. Higher Ground Cafe is located along Kensington Road, so it’s a bit of a walk from Sunnyside station (~10 minutes by foot). There are buses that service this cafe, and parking is available. However, parking could be sparse and not free.

ATMOSPHERE: Nice. Because this is such a popular cafe, Higher Ground could be fairly busy at certain times, mainly in the evenings and over the weekend. That said, however, there are a lot of tables and seats for your needs.

SERVICE: 8/10. The baristas are always friendly and nice, and make your coffee with care. You are expected to put away your dishes and cups when you’re done.

Lots of seating for you.
