Sorso Coffee is a Hipster Cafe in Airdrie

Sorso Coffee is a great cafe to just sit, relax and unwind, located outside of Calgary in Airdrie. I wanted to work on my website, and looked for a cafe that I could drive to near northeast Calgary (since parking in downtown is so expensive). And so, I stumbled upon Sorso Coffee in Airdrie while searching on Yelp.

I arrived at Sorso around 2PM on a Wednesday, and was pleasantly surprised that it was almost empty. This is a nice change of pace from the cafes in downtown Calgary, which are almost always entirely packed especially on an afternoon. There were plenty of power sockets so I sat down and turned on my laptop.

Here, I ordered their large 16 oz. latte (~$5) and a chocolate banana loaf (~$4). The latte was pretty tasty; no sugar as I like it, topped with nice latte art. While also delicious, I thought the chocolate banana loaf was expensive for the size. The loaf was also a bit too sweet for my liking, even when paired with the latte. With my latte and loaf in hand, I worked on this blog for a couple hours.

Sorso is also great for socials and meet-ups! Two of my friends also came down and we just chatted and caught up for hours, without being interrupted by loud teenagers or office workers. We also ordered the spicy popcorn as a snack, which was okay.

Recommended? Yes…if you’re close to the area.

COST: Moderate. Drinks are rather average price; for a large cup (16 oz.), expect to pay about $5. However, I thought the baked goods were overpriced. For the small chocolate banana loaf, I paid about $4.50!

TASTE: Good. The drinks were good! My latte was tasty and not sweetened. Their choice of coffee for the latte was great because it had a sour note, and adding milk to it really mellowed out the flavour. The loaf was also good, and would probably be even better when eaten with coffee or americano. They also serve actual meals here, so if you’re feeling peckish for food, you can grab it here.

ACCESSIBILITY: Difficult. Because it is located outside of Calgary, you need a car to get here. However, if you live in northeast or northwest Calgary (or Airdrie), this is a perfect cafe to visit. That said, there is a lot of parking available. From northeast Calgary, it takes about 15 minutes on Deerfoot Trail to get to Sorso Coffee (exit at Exit 282).

ATMOSPHERE: Very nice. The cafe interior was very comfortable, and interior design had a very hipster-chic vibe. A meeting room was available for meetings, if needed. And, there is a small play area for kids if you come here with children. The cafe was not very busy, making it a perfect place to sit down and read or open up your laptop. The ambient music comprised of oldies and classics, but could get loud sometimes.

SERVICE: 8/10. The staff is very friendly and welcoming! Most of the staff is young, which brings an energetic and lively vibe to the cafe. Plus, when you leave, they will clean and clear up the table for you.
