Dinner at the Bridgeland Riverside Farmers’ Market

I LOVE farmers’ markets. I love talking to local vendors and farmers, I love the busyness and activity, and I love trying out new food! Of course, the Bridgeland Riverside Farmers’ Market was no exception.

In Calgary, outdoor farmers’ markets are seasonal, usually appearing between June and October. After half a year of winter, Calgarians take advantage of the sunny and warm summer months where produce (and warmth) is plentiful. Nearing the end of the summer season, it’s now high time for Calgarians to be outside and enjoy the weather.

My friend invited me to visit this market since she lives in Bridgeland. There were a number of food stalls and vendors selling their products from soaps to organic produce. Some food trucks stopped by to serve their food (Bandit Burger and Rice Rolls), and there was even a popsicle stand selling some gourmet (fancy) popsicles!

Buskers were on site to provide some entertainment for the crowd, and they played some nice background music. For the kids, they also have a kids corner filled with activities for families and children. Furthermore, at the Bridgeland Community Centre, there is “tools library” that lends tools for those who need them.

It was a beautiful evening, without a cloud in the sky. The sun was beginning to set, despite it being only 6PM. In Calgary, you know winter is coming when the sun sets earlier and earlier, and then we become surrounded by perpetual darkness (not that I’m complaining). It was a lovely evening for dinner on the grass 🙂

What’s for dinner?

Immediately when we arrived, we were met by some food stalls. An Indian food stall had some samosas that looked good, so we bought two for ~$4. Right next to this stall, there was a Polish/Ukrainian food stall that sold perogies and cabbage rolls. We sampled some vegetarian cabbage rolls and liked it, so we bought an order of it ($12).

After walking around the market, we saw a Japanese stall that sold some freshly-made sushi. Unfortunately, they ran out of the vegetarian combo, so we settled with just the avocado roll (~$5 for 6 pieces).

They were all very tasty! The samosas were crispy and naturally oily (I’m not complaining) with a potato filling. The cabbage rolls were delicious, juicy and tender. And, the sushi was perfectly chewy and sticky. Ain’t nothing wrong with carbs on carbs! ><

After dinner, I visited the Entrees, Etc. food stall and found out that the food they sell were all vegan! What a nice surprise! So, I bought the gluten-free & vegan chocolate cupcake, which satisfied my sweet tooth. It wasn’t the best cupcake I’ve had but it did the job 😀
