Dinner at Mamak Dang Chinatown

Mamak Dang Chinatown has the same tasty Malaysian cuisine as their first NE location, but within the location and convenience of downtown. 🙂

This Mamak Dang location is located in a small street mall called “Far East Shopping Centre” in Chinatown, along with many other eateries, markets and shops. For the uninitiated, the smell of traditional Chinese medicine, herbs & food may be a turnoff at the shopping centre, but I’m used to it.

We arrived on a Thursday early evening (after work), and we were the only ones in the eatery. I’ve passed this stall before during lunch and they were packed, so it’s nice that we had it all to ourselves!

Mamak Dang Chinatown isn’t huge; there are only a few tables in the shop itself. However during the lunch hour, they usually set up some tables outside to accommodate more customers. It is very simply-decorated, yet also very clean. Don’t expect anything high end or classy, because you won’t get that here.  😛

If anything, the eatery would mimic instead the street food stalls you would find in SE Asia, or the hawker centres of Malaysia and Singapore. Simple, clean and functional.

Very simple interior design and tables.

Mamak Dang’s biggest selling point is, of course, its food. They serve very good Malaysian cuisine from roti canai to nasi lemak & rendang to laksas. I ordered the vegetable house noodle soup, and my friend ordered the special (assorted) laksa. Our wait didn’t take long (~10 minutes), and the size of the bowl was generous.

The laksa was spicy, creamy and had a variety of toppings including egg, tofu puffs, shrimp, and fish balls. My vegetable noodle soup was light (with a tinge of creaminess), flavourful and herbal! Very delicious!  😀

If you love Malaysian food or have never tried it before (and want to try it), pay a visit to Mamak Dang!

Recommended? Yes!

COST: Inexpensive-Moderate. The dishes aren’t expensive, but it’s also not too inexpensive. However, the value is really good! The vegetable noodle soup was only $10 and the laksas vary between $11 – $13.

TASTE: Good. Mamak Dang serves excellent Malaysian food! My vegetable noodle soup was flavourful, and my friend liked her laksa! Their roti prata (or roti canai) is flaky and goes well with the curry sauce! Anything you get should be delicious! 😀

ACCESSIBILITY: Easy. Mamak Dang Chinatown is located in the Far East Shopping Centre in Chinatown. It’s highly accessible by public transportation and/or foot. Parking is limited to the curbside, however.

ATMOSPHERE: Okay. This location is more or less just a stall in the street mall it’s located in, so don’t expect high end interior design. I suppose it mimics the street food stalls/hawker centre stalls you would find in Southeast Asia (like Singapore).

SERVICE: 8/10. Though there was only one server, he was super friendly and attentive. I guess it also helped that we were the only ones in the eatery. 😀
