Rosso Coffee Roasters on Stephen Ave is the second location of the Calgary-based roaster. Starting off only as a cafe (called Caffe Rosso), Rosso branched out and started roasting their own coffee beans in 2012 and thus became “Rosso Coffee Roasters.”
One of the underlying principles in Rosso is that they want to make everything in-house. So, everything from the pastries to the sandwiches are made in-house. Even their coffee beans are roasted in-house at their Inglewood location!
Rosso is nearby Glenbow Museum, the premier art and cultural museum in Calgary, and the cafe reflects that. The red-painted walls pops out and makes it distinct from other cafes (since most other cafes would have some sort of white walls). There are also some art posted around the cafe for an extra bit of culture.
Despite being on Stephen Avenue, I’m surprised that it wasn’t as busy as I thought it would be. I got there around 9AM and it was essentially empty, save for a few oldies reading the paper. Perhaps because it’s a Saturday morning? I would bet that during the week, the cafe would be busy with suits and engineers since it is in the middle of Downtown Calgary.
I ordered a large soy latte to stay, but they didn’t have the large-sized cups so I had to get a to-go cup instead. I love that the baristas were able to make perfect & simple latte heart art on my espresso using soy milk (and no bubble too)!
If you’re in Downtown Calgary and want to get good coffee in a chill cafe, Rosso Coffee Roasters on Stephen Avenue is a must, Then next time, try their original location in Inglewood/Ramsay!
Recommended? Yes!
COST: Moderate. Prices for drinks are moderate here, just as you would find in other cafes. For a large espresso-based drink, expect to pay around $5.
TASTE: Good. Calgary’s cafe scene is growing and growing, and Rosso Coffee Roasters have really good coffee. My soy latte was superb and props to the baristas for actually putting on a very clear (albeit simple) heart latte art on my espresso!
ACCESSIBILITY: Easy. This location of Rosso Coffee Roasters is located on Stephen Avenue, so it’sΒ very accessible since it’s only a block away from the LRT stations (~1 minute by foot from Centre Street station).
ATMOSPHERE: Very nice. Rosso is very clean with lots of tables, so you won’t have difficulty finding a seat. It’s a nice place to sit down and relax or meet up with your friends for coffee. Music is mellow and easy listening. I would sit down here to do some work if only it wasn’t so far away from my house…
SERVICE: 8/10. Service at Rosso is great. The cafe have really friendly baristas that welcome with smiles! π
