Social Cafe at The Hub in Cochrane

The Hub is an unassuming cafe in an unassuming building in an unassuming neighbourhood in an unassuming town, which is a good thing! I think this is a great example of not judging a book by its cover.

Mobs of people take over many (good) cafes in Calgary just to sit and Instagram their fancy espresso-based drinks. Hence, many cafes are too crowded, especially on afternoons and weekends. So, it is a nice change of pace to see that this cafe in Cochrane was basically empty when we arrived. There were only about 5 other people in that huge place!

Two very close friends of mine share the same passion for cafes as I do. We visit Calgary’s cafes together, and today, they brought me to a cafe that they chanced upon in Cochrane called The Hub. We found a table quite easily and ordered our drinks. And the drinks came quickly! While there, we just drank, blogged and studied. The Hub was quiet, clean, comfortable and very friendly. It’s a great place to sit, or chat with friends, or even just do some typing.

Was it worth the 1/2 hour car ride? Definitely! While there are cafes like this in Calgary, you really can’t beat the atmosphere and overall feel of the place.

Recommended? Yes! Especially if you live in NW Calgary.

COST: Normal. As with any cafe, the prices for coffee and food are almost the same. For a regular 16 oz. latte, you can expect to pay around $5. They sell all kinds of coffee and espresso drinks, including latte, cappuccino, macchiato, mocha and americano.

TASTE: Good. I ordered their latte and it was pretty tasty. There wasn’t too much foam, and the milk complemented the acidity of the coffee. They also offer many baked goods and meals, should you want them. Moreover, if you’re craving ice cream, they serve various flavours of gelato!

ACCESSIBILITY: Difficult. The Hub is located in the town of Cochrane, just northwest of Calgary. So, you need a car to get to this cafe. There are no buses or trains (besides Greyhound) that would take you to Cochrane. Also, The Hub is NOT located in Cochrane proper; instead, it is located in a residential neighbourhood outside of downtown Cochrane.

ATMOSPHERE: Very nice. The decor is very cool, with “social meets” in mind. Sofas are plenty if you just want to relax and recline. Seats and tables are available just to sit and catch up with friends. If you need an outlet, there are tons for your laptops!

SERVICE: 9/10. The baristas are really friendly, and they greet you when you go up to the counter. The place was very clean; also, they clear up the tables promptly when people leave. Food and drinks are served quickly, so you don’t have to wait very long.
