Lunch at Deville Coffee on Stephen Avenue

Deville Coffee on Stephen Avenue is a popular cafe in Downtown Calgary, that is possibly most famous for their Nutella lattes.

I decided to visit Deville for lunch after visiting Fiesta Filipino at Olympic Plaza earlier that day. Unfortunately for me, most Filipino dishes are meat-based, so I ventured around to find a place to eat.

Fortunately for me, Deville was nearby, and it was in my list of cafes to visit in Calgary. Yay! When I arrived at the cafe, I sat by the window, which had a fantastic view of Downtown.

Hungry for lunch, I quickly ordered a vegetarian burrito (though, I would consider it as a wrap, NOT a burrito), which was served with chips, and a soy latte. Together it cost around $14.

While my wrap tasted delicious, I couldn’t justify the cost of it (~$8). It was soooo small, unlike those burritos from Chipotle or Mucho Burrito. Being the stingy person that I am, I savoured it with contempt. The soy latte was very good!

The saving grace at Deville is its atmosphere. Because it’s located in Fashion Central, it has an artsy/trendy vibe happening with cool music. The atmosphere at Deville is really great for social meets, whether with friends, SO, or coworkers.

I don’t recommend doing your work here, most especially if you require an outlet for a laptop or tablet as they have almost none. Initially, I wanted to do some blogging here, but there weren’t any outlets (that I could find, at least).

If you’re looking for a place to hangout with some friends, or have a business meetup, then Deville Coffee on Stephen Avenue is perfect for you. However, if you’re looking for a place to eat or do some work, find other cafes around like Rosso Coffee Roasters.

Recommended? Sure.

COST: Moderate. The prices at Deville are quite similar to most other cafes. For a large espresso-based drink, expect to pay around ~$5. Meals are small and cost between $6 – $9.

TASTE: Good. Their coffee is very good, and my soy latte was pretty tasty. The vegetarian wrap/burrito was good, but I thought it was such a small portion for its price.

ACCESSIBILITY: Easy. Deville Coffee is located in centre of Downtown Calgary, along 1st Street SW and 8th Avenue/Stephen Avenue, so it’s highly accessible.

ATMOSPHERE: Nice. I love the artsy vibe at Deville (they share the building at Fashion Central), and it’s really a perfect place to meet up with friends or coworkers or business partners. The only downside is the lack of outlets (for computers), so I don’t recommend doing work here.

SERVICE: 8/10. While it is mostly a self-serve cafe, their servers, baristas, and kitchen workers are friendly and they make the food & drinks pretty quickly.
