A Tasty Surprise at Jackie’s Thai

Jackie’s Thai is an underrated gem hidden in the confines of Eau Claire Market.

I was invited by Jackie and her colleague (Mark) to come downtown and try the food at Jackie’s Thai. It was a great opportunity to finally try this stall, and I was treated for a free meal! Yay! 🙂

Jackie’s Thai is located within the food court in Eau Claire Market. It’s not a sit down restaurant, but instead it reflects the street food stalls you would see in Thailand. You order the food by the street and eat it on food court-like tables.

Curries are laid out in front of you, as they would in SE Asia.

They offered all the vegetarian options that they had including the vegetarian pad thai, veggie yellow curry and the vegetarian som tam (green papaya salad). They were really so nice to accommodate my vegan needs (i.e. no fish sauce in the som tam or pad thai). Jackie also gave me the cold hibiscus tea to drink.

All I have to say is that the food was extremely tasty! I was surprised that the som tam was made vegetarian, since it’s usually made with fish sauce! Everything was delicious: fresh, salty, a bit sweet and spicy!

My favourite is the vegetarian pad thai! It is easily customizable with toppings like bean sprouts, cilantro, peanuts, pickled onions, chili oil. garlic oil, pepper and lime. 😀

What I love is that Jackie makes the food herself, so you can make sure that the food is good (she is Thai, by the way).

What a feast!! And hibiscus tea to drink! 😀

Recommended? A definite yes!

COST: Inexpensive. While I ate for free, the prices are very affordable! A big plate of pad thai is $10, and you can get a 2-item combo for $12. The servings are also huge, so the price is justified!

TASTE: Very good. I haven’t been to Thailand, so I don’t know if the food is 100% authentic. What I do know is that all the food I tasted was very good! The veggie yellow curry and som tam were delicious! But my favourite is the vegetarian pad thai: sweet, salty, a bit sour, spicy and fresh!

ACCESSIBILITY: Easy. Since Jackie’s Thai is located within Eau Claire Market, it is very accessible by public transport. From the 4th Street station, it’s about ~10 minutes by foot. Parking is also available if you are driving.

ATMOSPHERE: Okay. Because it’s located in the food court, there isn’t much of an atmosphere here. It’s more of a casual eatery like what you would find in Asia. That said, the tables are clean and well-maintained.

SERVICE: 8/10. The ladies working at Jackie’s Thai were very friendly and welcoming. Jackie is a bit reserved but extremely nice! She really just wants you to eat her food! 😀

Ladies in the back hard at work. Sorry for the trouble! ><
